How to Care for a Handwoven Rug

A good handwoven rug lasts for generations with simple, regular care. Most damage comes from sun, moisture and rough cleaning, not from normal use.

Vacuum gently. Vacuum once a week, in the direction of the pile, without the rotating brush. Do not run the machine over the fringes. For kilims, use a flat nozzle.

Rotate the rug. Turn it by 180 degrees every six months so that wear and sunlight are spread evenly.

Protect it from the sun. Strong direct light fades colours over time. Use curtains or rotate the rug if one area sits in a sunny spot.

Use a rug pad. A breathable pad under the rug stops it from slipping, protects the floor and reduces wear on the back. Choose one made for natural-fibre rugs.

Deal with spills quickly. Blot with a clean, dry cloth, working from the edge towards the centre. Do not rub. Use only a little cool water, and never soak the rug. Dye can run on wet wool, so test any product on a hidden corner first.

Avoid heavy furniture marks. Place furniture feet on small cups or move them slightly from time to time. Brush up flattened pile with your fingers.

Let it breathe. Keep rugs away from damp rooms. If you store a rug, roll it (do not fold it) with the pile inward and wrap it in a breathable cotton sheet, never in plastic.

When to call a professional. For deep cleaning, stains that do not lift, or repairs to edges and fringes, a specialist rug cleaner is the safest choice.
